Rainbow Albatross limited-edition print hanging above a leather sofa

Limited edition: Rainbow Albatross

Shy Albatross are one of the Southern Oceans most iconic birds. Soaring effortlessly across the high seas, these birds command respect from all onlookers. They are unique amongst the albatross family in that they Australia’s only endemic albatross species, breeding exclusively on three remote Tasmanian islands.

As with most of their kin, Shy Albatross are extraordinary on the wing. They utilise unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, a remarkable phenomenon whereby one half of the brain rests at a time, along with the corresponding eye. This allows them to spend the vast majority of their life on the wing, resting only occasionally on the oceans surface. Shy Albatross have been recorded travelling up to 1000km in a single 24 hour period.

These magnificent emblems of the deep south are considered endangered under the EPBC Act, with an estimated 15,000 breeding pairs remaining.

A passion for nature

I've been wandering around with a camera in hand since I was seven. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to study photography in Tasmania through my senior years of college, and since then have won a number of Australian photography awards, mostly from the Ecological Society of Australia.

I'm now finishing a BSc in Zoology & Ecology at JCU in Far North Queensland. I work as an ecologist and expedition guide across Australia and use my work as an opportunity to travel and explore.

I enjoy being outside - be that hiking, taking photos, camping, fishing, riding motorbikes or any combination thereof.
